The Challenge
In August 2022, the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo faced a significant challenge in making its event more accessible for visitors with complex care needs. The Tattoo, held on the iconic Edinburgh Castle Esplanade, returned with its show Voices after a two-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic. However, the lack of suitable facilities for individuals requiring more than standard accessible toilets posed a barrier to inclusivity.
Approach
Innova Care Concepts stepped in to address this challenge by proposing the installation of a modular Changing Places toilet. Changing Places toilets cater to over 250,000 people in the UK who require specialist healthcare equipment, such as an overhead hoist system, to ensure safety and reduce strain on caregivers during transfers. Innova’s solution aimed to enhance accessibility and inclusivity for the Tattoo’s diverse audience.
Implementation
The modular Changing Places toilet was installed on the Edinburgh Castle Esplanade, equipped with state-of-the-art healthcare equipment to meet the needs of individuals with complex care requirements. Innova’s team worked closely with the Tattoo organizers to ensure the facility was seamlessly integrated into the event’s infrastructure. This installation marked a significant step towards making cultural events more inclusive.
Results
The addition of the modular Changing Places toilet transformed the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo into a more accessible event, allowing individuals with complex care needs to participate fully.
