It’s a question we hear quite often from OTs, care teams, and equipment providers: “I’m supporting a client who has a TR Comfortline bath. Does it need a LOLER inspection, since it’s height adjustable?” Great question—and we have a clear answer.

Height Adjustable Baths: What the Regulations Say

According to current LOLER guidance, a height adjustable bath on its own does not require a LOLER inspection. The key factor is whether the bath includes any lifting elements that handle people transfer.

However, if the bath has a traversing seat (i.e., a seat that moves someone from outside the bath into it), then just the seat needs LOLER testing—not the bath itself.

This distinction helps ensure that lifting components are regularly assessed for safety and compliance, while avoiding unnecessary inspections for equipment that doesn’t fall under LOLER’s remit.
